Data Import and Export Features in Visio 2016 (and 2013)

One of my most viewed articles is about the data import and export features in Visio 2010 (see https://blog.bvisual.net/2011/05/24/data-import-export-features-in-visio-2010/ ), so I thought that I should do something similar for Visio 2016. In fact, there is very little change since Visio 2013 …. The download file contains VBA code that I used to connect the shapes together from the data recordsets.

Linking an Access Web Database to Visio

There is a great video on Channel 9 about Access Web Apps, and how to link to them on the desktop ( see https://channel9.msdn.com/events/MVP-Virtual-Conference/MVP-Virtual-Conference-Americas-2015/CONS2-Using-Access-and-SharePoint-for-Travel-Expenses-and-Pulling-up-Maps). However, they never mentioned linking to Visio, so I thought I would correct that omission. I had previously tried to use Link Data to Shapes with an Access Web database, but failed, however watching this video encouraged me to try again!

My SQL and SharePoint Saturday additional content

I am presenting my view of using Visio to Visualize data with SQL Server and SharePoint today. The slideshow is available for viewing at https://doc.co/Q43c2m but, whilst I wait for my turn to talk, I have created a smart prism shape to demonstrate many of the smartness of shapes and the data linking features of Visio. The file can be downloaded from http://1drv.ms/1FDAZgI .

Microsoft Visio 2013 Themes

Visio supports Microsoft Office themes with their variants, and I have been experimenting with their affect on data graphics, so I thought I would create a document with examples of each theme applied to some data graphics. I would hesitate before using some of these, but it is interesting to see the appearance of each.

SQL Saturday Business Intelligence Special in Edinburgh

We had a fantastic weekend in Edinburgh where I presented Visio as a BI solution for SQL professionals at SQL Saturday. I volunteered because, quite frankly, I do not think that Microsoft promote Visio for BI enough, even though they have put in the BI domain for Microsoft partner competencies. This was a community event, so many thanks to all of the sponsors for enabling it, the many volunteers for running around, and especially to Jen Stirrup for organising it ( see http://jenstirrup.com/2015/06/15/jens-pass-diary-sqlsaturday-edinburgh-my-heartfelt-thanks-go-to/ ).

Dropping and Connecting Linked Data Shapes in Visio

I like linking data to shapes in Visio. It saves time in filling in Shape Data and adding text, or any Data Graphic to them. Basically I am lazy, and I also like to create macros for repetitive tasks, so in this blog I provide two macros to save the drudgery of two tasks I do so often:

  1. Dropping and data linking a number of items from an External Data recordset filtered by values in a column or columns
  2. Connecting shapes together following a parent-child relationship between Shape Data values

Things that Should be Easy

Every so often (too often in the IT industry) I encounter things that should have been very easy to do but turned out to be far too complicated. My favorite topics include SharePoint, .Net development, and software architecture, especially distributed systems.
